Tonight is the inaugural kickoff for the first annual Uptown Film Festival, a two-day celebration in Birmingham highlighting the stars on Michigan's film industry horizon.
"We are extremely excited to bring the Uptown Film Festival to life this year," said Jeffrey Spilman, UFF co-executive director. "The films and talent highlighted during this event have played key roles in the substantial growth and success of the Michigan film industry during the past several years. The festival recognizes the hard work and dedication of the state's film industry professionals, and the productions they've created in Michigan."
The festival takes place March 11 and 12 at the Birmingham Palladium 12 Theatre, at 250 North Old Woodward Ave., and the Birmingham 8, at 211 South Old Woodward Ave.
Highlighting its opening will be tonight's premiere of "Kill The Irishman," to benefit Gleaners Food Bank, the Arthritis Foundation and The Detroit Institute of Arts. The film stars Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Ray Stevenson and Michigan native John Hawkinson
"Kill The Irishman" takes places in the heart of Cleveland during the summer of 1976, where bombs have been detonated and a turf war is raging between Irish mobster Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) and the Italian mafia. Written and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and inspired by Rick Porello's true crime account, "To Kill The Irishman: The War That Crippled The Mafia," it chronicles the life of Green, who fearlessly graduated through the ranks of the Italian mafia to become a powerful leader, known as the man the mob couldn't kill.
