The preview parties for Emagine Entertainment's newest facility in Royal Oak, May 13-15, will not only be entertaining but will serve to help three charities.
"It's going to be great," said Janice Morgan of Birmingham and the development officer for the Judson Center, a nonprofit community services resource in Southeast Michigan. It is one of the groups to benefit from the weekend festivities.
"We've partnered with Gleaners Community Food Bank," Morgan said. "We'll have a full house if everyone shows up. I know we've got 400 coming for sure."
Tonight, Variety, the children's charity, kicks things off with "A Star is Born" black-tie gala featuring exquisite food and music by Bob Anderson. Besides enjoying great music and food, guests will be encouraged to check out the 10 state-of-the-art auditoriums equipped with digital projection and stadium seating and Star Lane's 16-lane upscale bowling center. A lot of guests will be attending just to find out what upscale bowling is all about. One hint: Four of the venue's lanes are on the mezzanine level in a private recreational enclave known as the "High Roller Room." Benefitting the Judson Center and Gleaners Community Food Bank will be "A Night To Emagine," a red-carpet evening beginning at 7 p.m. May 14 with cocktails, freshly prepared food, bowling, interactive experiences, plus much more. Tickets for this event are $100 each. Attendees can designate their proceeds to go to both or one of the charities, said Morgan, who joined the team at the Judson Center two years ago.
"We are one of the most needed and best kept secrets in the area," Morgan said of The Judson Center, which began as an orphanage in a farmhouse at the corner of 13 Mile and Greenfield Road back in 1924, has become a center that provides more than 400,000 personalized support services (for everything from autism and adoption to mental health and foster care) to children and families each year. "Most of the general public is unaware of the center because most of the services are by referrals… but the Judson Center is an amazing agency fully committed to helping children and families succeed over the difficult challenges they face."
One example is a Roseville couple that decided to become foster parents after an overseas adoption didn't work out.
"On their ninth wedding anniversary, they opened their home to two brothers, 3 1/2 and 1 1/2," said Morgan. "The boys had been removed from their home after the older brother was shot in the eye with a BB gun by an adult relative. The boy is legally blind in his left eye in addition to suffering the effects of fetal alcohol syndrome. Within the year, the couple were offered the opportunity to adopt the boys. They accepted."

The weekend festivities will be topped off May 15 by the "Emagine for Youth," presented by the Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland County and the Royal Oak Foundation for Public Education. Kicking off with music by the Royal Oak High School jazz band, the family-friendly event runs from 1 to 4 p.m., with an afternoon at the movies followed by a VIP red-carpet event featuring food, bowling and entertainment starting at 5 p.m. For tickets to this event, visit Emagine For Youth
The public opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 5 p.m. Monday. Tickets: $5 before 6 p.m. and $9.75 after.
