Macomb County's Bizzy Fizz among the swag in Oscar's goody bag

Since "American Hustle" star Bradley Cooper did not win the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role there's a good chance he took home one of the "Everyone wins at the Oscars" nominee swag bags. That means there's also a good chance he's become a fan of Bizzy Fizz products.

"It's pretty cool," said Laura Bisel of Utica and co-founder of Bizzy Fizz. The Michigan-based company was asked by the committee that fills the Oscar goody bags to submit a selection of their handmade and unique bath and body products for the bags. "They emailed us saying, 'Congratulations you've been chosen to be a part of this year's Oscars. I read it three times to be sure. Then we jumped up and down and had a big celebration."

We being she and her son Skylar - who is also co-founder of the company that was not only part of the Oscar celebrations but the Golden Globe Awards as well. Along with their products - wrapped in ribbon and featuring items inspired by the film industry - was a short story explaining how their company came to be. 

"When my son was 6 years old he got a bath fizzy in his stocking for Christmas," Bisel said. So excited and curious about the science behind the fizzy - Bisel felt obliged to show her son more examples by mixing vinegar with baking soda. Their homeschool project led the two of them to create their very first bath fizzy - which launched Skylar on a whole new adventure of creativity. As Bisel explains on their website, "Skylar loved it so much that he started dreaming of all the different kinds he could make, ingredients, surprises he could tuck inside... his mind was exploding with ideas. It didn't take me long to realize there was no stopping him. I agreed to help produce his vision and he started to give our fizzies away as gifts."

The response was so great Skylar decided why not turn his hobby into a business. "So, not wanting to squash his dream, I decided to put our little company together. He came up with the name, and Bizzy Fizz Bath Treats was born," said Bisel. Nine-years later, it's become a thriving Michigan-made business making everything from baby bubble bath to body scrubs and lip balm and moisturizing shave lotion for men - which is what Bisel and her son submitted for the Oscar bags.

How does one get into the act?

Bisel said she and Skylar belong to an exclusive group of artists from all over the world who participate in charity events and things like that. When the group was asked by the organization that works with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences if anyone wanted to be a part of the Oscars, she and Skylar jumped at the chance. The process required them to submit an application and samples of their products to the organization. After a nerve-wracking couple of weeks they received an email saying, "Congratulations, you've been chosen to be a part of this year's Oscar celebration."

What does that mean for a company like Bizzy Fizz?

"We also had our bath scrub shown on 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,'" Bisel said. Plus, as soon as people see celebrities using a certain product they tend to follow suit.

It’s estimated that nominees received more than $55,000 worth of products in their Oscar treasure trove including maple syrup from Quebec that retails for $250.
